Dave Liebman Big Band In Philadelphia

Dave Liebman Big Band

Dave Liebman apparently has a big band – who knew? Very cool to know though, as his concert late last month was hailed by AllAboutJazz.com’s Victor L. Schermer as comparable to “comparison with the classic Thelonious Monk Big Band at Town Hall in 1959″ Although it was a big band setting with great arrangements by the likes of Vince Mendoza, Tim Hagans, and Jim McNeely, the group had the lightness and feel of a small group.

On top of all of that, Vic Juris, one of my mentors from William Paterson University’s jazz program was heavily featured as well, so it’s a small world after all.

Besides Dave, sax players on the gig included Gunnar Mossblad: director, alto and soprano saxophone, Piccolo, flute, clarinet; Charles Pillow: alto saxophone, oboe, flute; Dave Riekenberg: tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet; Tim Ries: tenor saxophone, clarinet; Jay Brandford: baritone saxophone, bass clarinet.
