Stefan Karl Schmid, described as "one of the most interesting saxophonists of the young German jazz scene" (jazzandrock.com), has developed a distinctive style characterized by a "nuanced sound language" (Kölner Stadtanzeiger) and an "alert intellect" (DLF). The half-Icelandic, half-German musician showcases his virtuosity as both a saxophonist/clarinettist and composer across various projects and ensembles.
Leading formations from duos to large ensembles like his octet Pyjama and the Subway Jazz Orchestra, Schmid impresses with a "masterful sound language full of nuances" (H.P. Koll). With ten releases under his own name and over 40 recordings as a sideman, his artistic voice resonates in both leadership and collaboration. He brings a unique ability to shape complex structures while blending into collective soundscapes, always serving the music as a whole.
Schmid studied in Nuremberg, Cologne, and New York, and has been a member of the Bundes Jazzorchester. He has received numerous awards, curates concert series, and currently teaches jazz saxophone and ensemble at the University of Arts in Mannheim, as well as composition and ensemble leading in the Bigband Masters program at HfMDK Frankfurt.
