Behind the Scenes: Adding Piano to Bob Mintzer Interview

As some of you know, I am currently working on a follow-up to my educational program for saxophone players, Bulletproof Saxophone Playing. You may have also heard me say that this time around I’m featuring Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, and Bob Sheppard. Needless to say, I’m completely honored to get to work with these truly generous and humble music masters.

To give an update, I’ve recorded all three interviews, and I’m in the editing phase. Perhaps it would have been good to get some behind the scenes footage of the interviews themselves, but I just thougt of the idea now, so I thought I’d give you a “backstage pass” to the rest of the process.

In this video, I share how Bob Mintzer did some incredible acapella playing for demonstration purposes (there were not other instruments set up for our session). However, I wanted to give harmonic context to what he was doing, so I took the liberty of adding some piano overdubs (hopefully Bob won’t mind!). This video is me talking about that process.

As I mention it in the video, I’m not a huge fan of being on video camera, so please bear with my “umms” and awkward screen presence. I’m definitely working on getting better! In the meantime, I hope you dig this video.
