Ok people I’m 41 and I’m picking up my Alto after about 15 years and am going to try to join the local county concert band tomorrow night.I’m kind of tripping out, But my teanage daughters (orchestra) are telling me just do it. I guess I’m looking for advice to get my nerve back up, Some of it is coming back, But scales are coming back so easy

Hey there Mongo,
That’s so great that you’re picking up your alto again! And I think that your daughters’ advice is spot-on.
Now, if you were picking up your alto after 15 years to play a concerto with the New York Philharmonic, then that would be one thing. However, being that you’re joining a local county concert band, then I can pretty much guarantee you that the band is going to consist of folks who are not full-time musicians, but folks in your same exact situation.
It’s just like when people start a new job and have that thought of “they’re all going to realize that I’m a fraud who slipped in between the cracks.” But that is pretty much never the case. My philosophy with potentially intimidating gigs is that if I’m there, then *I belong there.*
So I say go have fun, give it 100% of whatever it is that you’ve got, and forget about the opinions of others, since their opinions won’t really do much for your life in the big scheme of things one way or another. You’re probably doing much better than you think you are.
Thanks so much for sharing your situation with us, and I hope that what I said helps at least a little!

Haha, of course, I’m not surprised at all that it went well, but so happy to hear it! And once you get those horn repairs, it will be that much better.
Glad I could help, and please do let me know how it goes with the band.
